Hey, my name is Maria Meijburg!

I am incredibly passionate about Functional Safety and System Safety, and I have started Better Systems Labs to help bring custom safety solutions to more people and companies.

Custom solutions is a pretty broad term on purpose. It could mean training, advice, support, a report, consultation or contracting. My skillset is both broad and deep, and growing every day.

At Nuro I worked on remote supervision and remote interaction, focusing on safety analyses, design and safety processes. I also worked to create cohesive and detailed safety cases for all parts of the robot, including testing and deployments. I spent time working on operational safety, customer safety reports, and standards evaluation and compliance. I was also able to present at OSS.5 in 2023 in San Francisco on the topic of human operators as part of the autonomous system safety case before and after deployment.

At Outrider I spent my time developing and maturing safety artifacts for a wide arrange of items and subsystems. I matured their operational systems and their functional safety processes. The robot, deployment and customers provided unique challenges such as a new array of safety standards, one-of-a-kind robotic parts, and challenging operational design domains. I was able to make a lasting impression on the safety culture of the company.

I had some incredible projects at nuTonomy & Motional, varying from setting up safety processes and creating a very first hazard analysis, functional safety concept and safety case. Some of my most impactful work included creating a risk acceptance framework for the company leadership, a complex and novel approach to safety validation, and the primary author the company’s first VSSA report. At the same time, I was able to participate in co-authoring a Singapore National Standard on functional safety for autonomous vehicles, which has had a big impact on every company testing autonomous vehicles in Singapore.

I started my career at Jaguar Land Rover, delivering into production the ADAS department’s first safety case for their 2015 and subsequent AEB systems. I also worked their first SAE L2, L3 and L4 systems. During my time here I learned a lot about processes, structure and safety management. I was able to work closely to founding members of ISO26262 and ISO21448 which has given me a unique perspective on intent and application of the standards.
